15 CALIFORNIA ARCHITECTS ELEVATED TO FELLOW

American Institute of Architects elevates members to College of Fellows

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—February 23, 2018—The 2018 Jury of Fellows from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) elevated 152 member-architects to its prestigious College of Fellows, an honor awarded to members who have made significant contributions to the architecture profession. The fellows will be honored at a ceremony on June 22 at the AIA Conference on Architecture 2018 in New York City.

The fellowship program was developed to elevate those architects who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession and made a significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level. Prospective candidates must have at least 10 years of AIA membership and demonstrated influence in at least one of the following categories:

  • Promoted the aesthetic, scientific, and practical efficiency of the profession;
  • Advanced the science and art of planning and building by advancing the standards of architectural education, training or practice;
  • Coordinated the building industry and the profession of architecture through leadership in the AIA or other related professional organizations; or
  • Advanced the living standards of people through an improved environment.

The stringent requirements result in only three percent of the AIA’s more than 91,000 members being recognized as fellows. Currently, there are 3,425 living fellows globally.

Fellows are selected by a seven-member Jury of Fellows. This year’s jury included Karen Nichols, FAIA (Chair), Michael Graves Architecture & Design; Peter Bardwell, FAIA, Bardwell + Associates, LLC; Mary A. Burke, FAIA, Burke Design and Architecture PLLC; Philip Castillo, FAIA, JAHN; Mary P. TWO RECIPIENTS NAMED FOR HUMANITARIAN AWARD

TWO RECIPIENTS NAMED FOR HUMANITARIAN AWARD

Andrew Goodwin, AIA, and Skid Row Housing Trust Accept the Norma Sklarek Award

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—The American Institute of Architects, California Council (AIACC), recognized Andrew Goodwin, AIA and the Skid Row Housing trust as the 2017 recipients of the Norma Sklarek Award.

This award program, implemented in 2014, in honor of the late Norma Sklarek, FAIA, whose name is associated with a litany of firsts, including the first African-American woman to become a member of the AIA (1959), and the first African-American woman to become a Fellow of the AIA (1980), is conferred by the AIACC Board of Directors on an architect in recognition of their social responsibility. The purpose of the award is to publicly recognize an architect making significant humanitarian contributions to society.

This year, the award honored an emerging professional well on his way to continuing the altruistic journey he is on. Andrew Goodwin, AIA, of San Luis Obispo.

Goodwin, whose practice specializes in conscious building, has had experience worldwide with providing housing and shelter for communities in need. Currently on faculty at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo’s College of Architecture and Design, Goodwin encourages students to learn to design altruistic structures. Through his pro-bono work, his firm, and his curriculum, he continues to be an advocate for more than awareness, but for social change.

Goodwin also collaborates with Skid Row Housing Trust, a nonprofit based in Los Angeles that provides permanent supportive housing for individuals experiencing homelessness. Skid Row Housing was also honored this year for an agency who collaborates within the architecture profession to directly affect the betterment of society. “We are proof that good, smart design, is appreciated by all and should not be exclusive to those who can afford it,” said CEO Mike ALvidrez when he accepted the award. This agency does indeed prove good design bridges divides, disconnects and barriers, and redefines what it means for a business to be socially aware.

Both will be honored spring 2018 at respective times, dates and locations.

California Wildfire Update

News, Relevance|

On October 8, 2017, fires broke out in Sonoma County and several regions throughout the state. On October 9, 2017, Governor Brown declared a state of emergency for California. AIA California Council is working closely with chapters in the affected areas for relief efforts, and with the California Office of Emergency Services for licensed architects that have been certified as Safety Assessment Program (SAP) Evaluators.
Cal-fire-aid--ad-sqThrough CalOES, AIACC maintains a database of licensed and certified architects who are trained in safety assessment. There are currently 330 certified SAPs in California. Many were eager and ready for the opportunity to deploy to wherever they were needed when AIACC’s Melissa Barton received the call late last Saturday evening to begin the deployment process. Since October 14, SAP architect members have reported to Napa and Sonoma counties to evaluate structures for the viability of re-entry. By week’s end, a total of 17 AIA SAPs will have completed over 300 detailed structural assessments, and we anticipate that more evaluators will be deployed as containment of the fires progresses.
The most affected area, located East of Santa Rosa includes the following fires: 37, Nuns, Oakmont, Tubbs, and Pocket. As of mid-morning October 20, CalOES reports 107,366 acres or 85% containment, and expected to have complete containment by October 24. An ongoing tally of 5,094 residential, 105 commercial, and 1,293 outbuildings have been destroyed. Also damaged were 291 residential, 25 commercial, and 65 outbuildings. The devastating damage continues to reveal itself, but so does the love which has been demonstrated by many of our members and chapters continual outpour of support and aid.
Redwood Empire chapter President, Paul Berger, AIA was in the field until mid-week. He and his team assessed over 120 structures in Napa. “It was devastating to see the destruction. But amidst the ruble there was so much goodness and commodore… people going out of their way to work together. It was almost serendipitous,” he said.
Nearby chapters are stepping up and assisting AIA Redwood Empire in workload, staffing, and workspace. The chapters have developed and staffed Local Assistance Centers that have interacted with hundreds of residents who have been displaced and need resources and information. While it is too early to rebuild, there is an urgency on homeowners to begin the rebuild process with their insurance companies, and there is a great need for all architects ready and willing to assist. AIARE is working on polling their chapter to understand the degree in which their architectural community was effected and continue providing for their members’ needs. The AIACC is working with AIAEB and other chapters in setting up emergency SAP Evaluator trainings for architects who have an interest in participating in future assessment efforts. This is just a minute, yet important, amount of work that is being done and there is much yet to embark upon. Please join us in supporting all affected chapters, especially AIARE who is going to need the greatest amount of assistance given all homes and lives lost.
The AIACC has set up a donation fund for anyone who would like to make a tax deductible monetary donation. Text CAFIRES, a space, and the amount you want to give to 41444.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2017 AIACC RESIDENTIAL AWARDS ANNOUNCED

California Architects Honored with Prestigious State Awards Program

Sacramento, Calif.—American Institute of Architects, California Council (AIACC), proudly announces this year’s Residential Design Award Recipients—thirteen living spaces with programs equally as different and equally as well-thought out and executed.

On a sunny September Friday in San Francisco, four jurors convened to deliberate, discuss and cull down a cadre of projects from an outstanding pile of submissions from California architects, or residences in California. The jurors had a difficult job ahead of them, but they succeeded in determining the best from the best. They intensely discussed as they narrowed with accurate, careful and extreme specificity.

This year’s jury was comprised of four dynamic voices within the architecture world and included Matthew Kreilich, AIA, Mary Griffin, FAIA, Lawrence Scarpa, FAIA, and James Zack, AIA. These four worked on a finely-honed instinct combined with a palette of deep understanding of how residential programs can work at their best and still encompass the proverbial definition of high design

They picked a range within the thirteen ultimately chosen, but were particularly impressed with the caliber of work. One juror commented on a strategy of theirs. “I look for lively yet restrained with a large amount of real intellect and play, if that makes sense.” Turns out this jury, despite some friendly debate over certain projects, were all looking for the exceptionally smart—and looking also to residences that can solve problems within the community as well as be aesthetically pleasing.

Following is a list of the for projects awarded. However, like every architect and every structure, there is a unique story. To find out more or to schedule an interview, contact Shannon Calder at 916.642.1718.
