In Memoriam: Steven Arthur O’Leary, AIA

Steven Arthur O’Leary, Architect, and AIA member, former husband of Michele Grace Hottel, AIA, father to Kelley, John and Griffin O’Leary, was at home with his family when he passed away peacefully on June 30, 2023.

Steve graduated from Cal Poly Pomona in 1989, became licensed in 1993 and worked at architecture firms in Southern California including Appleton & Associates (Appleton, Mechur & Associates), Lomax Rock Architects, Levin & Associates, HMC, MW Steele Architects and NAV/FAC SW. He was the designer of many AIA Design Award-winning projects.

While he was a student, he was on the Michael Folonis, FAIA, and Welton Beckett, FAIA, design team as a finalist for the West Hollywood Civic Center competition.

He was a docent at the Frank Lloyd Wright Barnsdall House and with another architect recreated the design of the living room furniture from photographs and built the model that would be used for the fundraising campaign that was used to rebuild the furniture for the renovation.

He was a past instructor at the UCLA extension and Mesa College and a thesis advisor at Newschool San Diego.

He will be missed not only for his great talent as an architect but for his sense of humor and engaging personality.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 29th at 1pm at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, San Diego, California with a reception to follow.

In Memoriam: Claude B. Stoller, FAIA

Californias architectural community recently lost an iconClaude B. Stoller passed away on May 16, 2023, at his home in Berkeley at the age of 101.

Throughout his lifetime, he was known both for his thoughtful and pragmatic design and as a stalwart advocate for the architects role in protecting the natural environment through energyefficient solutions.

He also is remembered for his activism for low and moderateincome housing, actively engaging the community to develop welldesigned, affordable, urban solutions.

He left a lasting mark on the architectural profession and on the many lives he touched.

In Memoriam: Ralph Vitiello, AIA

When AIA California heard the news about the death of Ralph Vitiello, staff was silenced with immediate grief.

Nicki Dennis Stephens, Hon. AIA, reflected on his relationship as a member and as a leader in the profession.

“Ralph was an integral part of the process that led to AIA California’s new office. When we started the search process, he stepped forward, not because he was looking for a long-term tenant, but he genuinely was interested in helping the organization. He was very patient with our exploration into different efforts and he generously gave of both his expertise and personally invested in the vision for this new, collaborative space.,” she said.

AIA Central Valley, Vitiello’s local chapter, posted this remembrance of him, and AIA CA wanted to share it with all.
